Find Ways to Reduce Stress

Did you know that chronic stress may weaken the immune system? With everything going on today, there is certainly no shortage of stress in our daily lives.  Now more than ever it’s important to do our best to manage that stress and take steps to reduce it.  The less stress our body experiences, the more equipped we are to handle other things that may be thrown our way, like a cold or flu.

So, what can you do to reduce stress?

Try these helpful tips:

1. Stay informed, but don’t let yourself get ‘overly addicted’ to the news. Remember to unplug from time to time instead of staying glued to your television, iPhone or tablet. Try picking up a book instead!

2. Exercise— while still maintaining social distancing measures. A simple walk around your neighbourhood, jog or game of family football will do the trick. Exercise also reduces the amount of stress hormone called cortisol in your body.

3. Have fun. After all, laughter remains some of the best medicine. Get creative and involve your family, whether it’s an evening of board games or something new.  In fact, Dr. Newton’s family is now having “dinner dance parties” where the family prepares food together while dancing around the kitchen—it’s a new tradition that might even stick when things return to normal!
